Leicester announce signing of Schwarzer

Leicester have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer from Chelsea on a free transfer.

The 42-year-old Australian, previously of Fulham, has signed an 18-month contract with the Premier League strugglers.

Schwarzer acted as Petr Cech’s stand-in last season but has not made an appearance for the Blues this term.

“I want to publicly thank Mark Schwarzer because he is leaving us,” Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said after the 3-0 FA Cup third-round win over Watford.

“As a goalkeeper when we needed him he was there for us, and as a professional and a person he was an amazing guy in our group

“So on behalf of my staff and players we want to say we are going to miss the big guy and we wish him all the best at his new life at Leicester.”

Mourinho also reiterated that there was no prospect of Cech leaving Stamford Bridge during this month’s transfer window despite speculation over the 32-year-old’s future.
