Mourinho ‘happy’ fans are backing Terry

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he is “happy” fans are chanting their support for dropped captain John Terry.

Terry has only started six of the 10 games so far this season and was once again left out of the starting line-up for Tuesday’s Champions League defeat against Porto.

Blues supporters could be heard calling for Terry, 34, to be recalled during the players’ post-match warm-down in Portugal.

“The fans can sing,” Mourinho said. “I am happy they sing and support him.

“It is more important they support him when he is not playing. When he is playing, and playing well, he doesn’t need support.”

But Mourinho insisted he does not find it difficult to drop his skipper, despite Terry being a talismanic figure in all of Chelsea’s three title-winning seasons under the Portuguese.

When asked if it was difficult to leave out a player who played every minute of every Premier League match for the champions last season, Mourinho replied “no”, adding: “He is ready every game to play, even the ones I leave him on the bench, he is ready.”
