Jose always believed Hazard would stay

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted he never doubted Eden Hazard would sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

The club are ironing out the final details of a long-term contract for the 23-year-old Belgian, who has been linked with the likes of Paris St-Germain in recent months.

Mourinho has always been confident that Hazard would stay and expects his contract extension to be announced shortly.

“He will [sign a contract],” Mourinho said.

“I was never worried since the moment I met his father and everything was very clear about their intentions and happiness to stay at Chelsea.

“After that it becomes a numbers situation and I am more than happy to be out of that.

“But the club always told me the situation would finish with a new contract and I was never worried about that.”

Hazard has scored nine goals for the Blues this season and 30 in his 85 league appearances since his £32m move from Lille in 2012.

His electrifying performances have seen him shortlisted for the Fifa world footballer of the year award and compared with the likes of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi.
