Antonio Conte defended Alvaro Morata after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal and backed the striker to rediscover his scoring touch.

Having squandered chances in Saturday’s thrashing of Stoke, Morata missed more opportunities at the Emirates Stadium despite being put through on goal.

“It is not a lucky period for him,” said Blues boss Conte, whose side were denied victory by Hector Bellerin’s injury-time equaliser.

“He had chances to score, but this is football. I’m very happy for his commitment and the commitment of all my players.

“He worked really hard for the team and this is the most important thing for me.

“Of course it is important to score because when you score your confidence is up and otherwise it is down. But he is young and needs to continue to work.

“The only thing I can say to him is to continue to work and to stay calm. If he continues to work in this way the goals will arrive.”

Conte was bitterly disappointed Chelsea were unable to hang on for the win after coming from behind to lead against the Gunners.

After Jack Wilshere put Arsenal ahead, Eden Hazard equalised with a penalty and Marcos Alonso made it 2-1 before Bellerin struck.

Conte said: “I think this was an exciting game for people who watched, but less for us. When you are winning and there are two minutes left, you have to win.

“To draw with a great team like Arsenal could be a good result, but at the end of the game there is disappointment.

“I’m not angry. Angry is a strong word. I know the players will also be disappointed. It was a good performance with good intensity.”
