Blues hopeful youngsters will progress

Chelsea Under-19s manager Adi Viveash says the club are hopeful some of his Uefa Youth League-winning side will progress to the first team.

Captain Izzy Brown [pictured] scored twice and Dominic Solanke also found the net as the young Blues beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2 in the final in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday.

And Viveash said: “Three of this group train with the first team every day and that is a start, and we feel that some of the others in this group can progress to be first-team players.”

Chelsea followed up a semi-final win against Roma by prevailing in an exciting game and deservedly being crowned European champions in their age group.

“We didn’t play as free-flowing as we did against Roma, but they [Shakhtar] were a better team and very tough opposition,” Viveash said.

“We just edged it but the final is about winning, so we are very pleased. Winning breeds confidence and that is what young players need to develop at a high level.

“The players should be really proud of themselves because is is a special tournament and they have followed in the footsteps of a great Barcelona team last year. I’m immensely proud of all of them.”
