Duo praised after Chelsea beat Bolton

Steve Holland praised Andre Schurrle and Kurt Zouma following Chelsea’s Capital One Cup win at home to Bolton.

Zouma scored on his Blues debut, while German playmaker Schurrle was at the centre of much of their best work and went close to scoring on a number of occasions.

Assistant first-team coach Holland said: “I think Andre perfectly reflected the mentality of the team, when you think that not much more than two months ago he was playing in the World Cup and tonight it was the Capital One Cup third round.

“He showed ambition and drive all night and looked the most likely source [of a goal] throughout the game.”

As for defender Zouma, Holland added: “Tonight, without being particularly tested – with respect to Bolton – he was impeccable in what he did.

“You want your centre-backs to defend first but if they can be a threat in the opposing box that’s a bonus and he got a goal I’m sure he’ll always remember.”

Chelsea, who will visit League Two outfit Shrewsbury in round four, seemed to be in complete control after Zouma put them ahead.

But Matt Mills equalised just after the half-hour mark and it needed a second-half strike from Oscar to see off the Championship side.

“We’re very happy with the team’s performance,” said Holland.

“You hope motivation isn’t a problem, and sometimes it can be, but the players’ mentality was exactly right from the kick-off. The quality with which they played was fantastic

“Bolton’s height was a worry and provided the equaliser, and a combination of missed chances, bad luck and very good goalkeeping meant we were still at the limit right at the end of the game.”
