Kalas looks likely to join Boro on loan

Middlesbrough look set to sign defender Tomas Kalas on loan from Chelsea.

Kalas’ season-long loan with Cologne is expected to be brought to an early end after he struggled to hold down a first-team place at the German club.

His representatives were keen to secure him a loan move to a Premier League club for the rest of the season and QPR were reported to be ready to sign him, but they are not looking to sign a defender.

The 21-year-old Czech is therefore likely to join Chelsea team-mates Patrick Bamford, Kenneth Omeruo and Jamal Blackman at the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough and Chelsea have a strong relationship as Boro manager Aitor Karanka was Blues boss Jose Mourinho’s assistant at Real Madrid and the two remain friends.

Striker Bamford, 21, has scored eight goals in 19 appearances since moving to Teesside and on Wednesday his loan spell was extended until the end of the season.

Kalas has made four first-team appearances for Chelsea and impressed on his Premier League debut against Liverpool last April.
