Drogba features as Chelsea lose friendly

Didier Drogba featured for Chelsea as their pre-season campaign continued with a 3-0 loss against Werder Bremen.

The Blues hero, who recently returned for a second spell at the club, came on as a half-time substitute in Germany, where there were also outings for Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard.

Goalkeeper Courtois played the first half and made a fantastic early save to push away a header from former Chelsea man Franco di Santo.

But the Belgian was unable to keep out Eljero Elia’s 17th-minute penalty after John Terry had handled in the area, or the header from Ludovic Obraniak that left Chelsea two down at the interval.

Jose Mourinho’s side improved in the second half and Cesc Fabregas missed their best opportunity when he failed to hit the target after being found by Hazard.

Drogba had a brief sight of goal but fired over from a tight angle after being set up by Fabregas.

Hazard then created a chance for himself by beating two defenders but he was unable to apply the finish, dragging his shot wide.

The home side netted a third with two minutes remaining – again from the penalty spot.

This time Felix Kroos slotted past Petr Cech after Nathan Ake had been adjudged to have fouled Nils Petersen despite appearing to win the ball cleanly.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Courtois (Cech 45); Azpilicueta (Boga 71), Zouma (Cahill 45), Terry (Baker 76), Luis (Ivanovic 45); Van Ginkel (Mikel 45), Matic; Salah (Hazard 57), Fabregas, Torres (Ake 57); Costa (Drogba 45).
