“Pedro is not available. He is suffering from an injury in the Arsenal game and was not able to recover. It is a knock in his ankle.”

On whether Antonio Rudiger might play

“He could – also because there is no Victor Moses (Moses is suspended). It could be an opportunity to start the game for Rudiger. I have been impressed with him. He is a strong player with a good personality.”

On his players’ attitude

“Honestly I am pleased because we are working very well with the team and this group of players and the commitment is incredible and also better than the last season.

“I am very happy because these players are working so hard. We are trying to improve.”

On the search for new signings

“It’s simple. I am the coach of this team and my aim is to try to improve my players and team.

“My only task is to be focused on the pitch and work with my players. This must be my focus in this period.

“In the transfer market the club is trying to do their best. I don’t like to speak through the press. The club knows very well my opinion and are trying to do their best.”

On Alvaro Morata

“Alvaro is working very well and is improving a lot. In these 10 days he is improving his physical condition and is starting to understand what we want, but he needs time to understand to adapt to our style of football.

“It is normal for me, and also for players that start to work with me, that they need time to adapt to our style of football.

“A striker is a really important role and it is very important to understand which is the position I want during the game. It is more difficult to adapt than with the other roles.”

On Gary Cahill becoming club captain

“This choice was a natural choice because Gary has played for the club for many years and has won a lot. It is right to make this decision. I am happy for this.”

On Arsene Wenger suggesting Chelsea’s loan policy means their small squad is their own fault

“I am not looking for sympathy from any coaches for this situation. The situation is clear. If the club decided to loan the players for development it is because the players are not ready to play for Chelsea.”
