Chelsea youngsters undone by Southampton despite Abraham goal

Chelsea’s youngsters paid the price for spurning numerous chances as they slipped to 3-1 home defeat against Southampton in the Under-21 Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

Sam McQueen’s first-half double and Jake Hesketh’s shot after the break sealed victory with Tammy Abraham’s strike coming too late to spark a comeback.

Chelsea created and missed numerous first-half opportunities, notably when Abraham hit the post with a header, Charly Musonda dragged a shot wide and the lively Alex Kiwomya fired a first-time effort off target.

Saints led when McQueen scored with a clever far-post volley with the outside of his right foot and they made it 2-0 before the break when McQueen tapped home after Armani Little’s shot came back off the post.

Jay Dasilva was unlucky to see a fierce 25-yard strike hit the bar as Chelsea continued to threaten in the second period.

But Hesketh fired in a third after a mistake by Jake Clarke-Salter, and although Abraham’s fine low shot made it 3-1, Saints took the points.
