Chelsea v West Ham player ratings

Chelsea’s season – and Antonio Conte’s reign as boss – got off to a dramatic, winning start. Here’s how we rated each Blues player in the 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Thibaut Courtois: 6

Largely untroubled throughout, collecting crosses when called upon. Not at fault for James Collins’ equaliser.

Branislav Ivanovic: 7

The Serbian looked a threat going forward and resolute defensively. After a disappointing season last year, he needs to win back the fans’ support, and this was a solid start.

John Terry: 7

Somewhat slow to react in the build up to West Ham’s equaliser, but overall was a commanding presence up against Andy Carroll.

Gary Cahill: 7

Looked strong in the air and confident in possession. Occasionally caught out of position during West Ham’s threatening spell in the second half.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6

Won the penalty which put Chelsea ahead. Showed glimpses of quality going forward, but often lacked the final ball.

Oscar: 6

Brought off near the end, the Brazilian didn’t make much of an impact and struggled to make use of dominant spells in possession. Worked hard off the ball though.

Nemanja Matic: 7

Looked calm on the ball and held firm in front of Chelsea’s back four. Will be keen to make an impression under Conte.

N’Golo Kante: 7

A strong debut from the midfielder. He won possession back on numerous occasions, allowing the more creative players to influence the game.

Willian: 7

A real threat from dead-ball situations. The Brazilian linked up well with Diego Costa, especially during a dominant first-half performance.

Eden Hazard: 8

Showed the sort of form that was missing last season. A brilliant weaving run and shot in the first half deserved a goal and he confidently stepped up to fire home from the penalty spot to put the Blues ahead.

Diego Costa: 8

A constant handful for the West Ham defence. A clinical finish for the winning goal rounded off a strong all-round performance from the Blues striker.
