Chelsea v Dynamo Kiev player ratings

Willian’s stunning late free-kick earned Chelsea a much-needed Champions League victory over Dynamo Kiev. Here’s how we rated the players in the 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. 

Asmir Begovic: 5
Made a diabolical decision to come for the corner that led to Aleksandar Dragovic’s equaliser, an attempt to atone for his fumble which preceded the set-piece in the first place. Laid on Chelsea’s opening goal with a mis-hit clearance that could easily have gone straight to a striker.

Baba Rahman: 7
Still looks prone to a lapse in concentration and clearly has work to do on his positional play but coped admirably with the very dangerous Andriy Yarmolenko and also got forward well.

Kurt Zouma: 6
Far more comfortable playing at centre-back where his inexperience and positional mistakes are not so obviously exposed. Made one perfectly timed tackle when tracking back in the second half.

John Terry: 7
A slightly tentative showing, but effective. The captain made certain of his clearances and took no risks with the ball, seemingly mindful of the need to get the basics right after being the subject of a great deal of criticism.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
One of his quieter performances this season, no doubt because of the tactics which meant both full-backs were limited in their attacking ambition. Was rarely troubled.

Nemanja Matic: 7
A confident and measured display. He recognised the need to fill the gaps left by the unpredictable midfield approach adopted by Ramires and provided decent cover with equally impressive distribution.

Ramires: 5
It’s impossible to fault the Brazilian’s work ethic and energy but his lack of quality on the ball remains a huge concern and was the reason for so many attacks breaking down. Made some purposeful runs but his use of the ball must improve.

Willian: 9
A sensational performance, so typical of his season so far. Aside from the brilliant free-kick – which keeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy should have done better with – he ran tirelessly, forced the own goal with a teasing cross, set up several excellent chances and did some fine defensive work. Outstanding.

Cesc Fabregas: 7
Played a couple of delightful passes which almost led to goals and covered every part of the pitch. His quality stood out at times but is still not at his best.

Oscar: 8
Is by no means a wide midfielder but against average opposition he looked happier on the left than he did against Liverpool. Used the ball intelligently, did his defensive work well and almost scored with a fine first-time strike after the break.

Diego Costa: 6
A steady display, with plenty of good touches around the Dynamo penalty box. Tried to make the most of some contact in the box to win a penalty when it seemed he should have ran on towards goal. Should have done better with an injury-time chance.

Eden Hazard: 7
Looked sharp and threatening during his cameo appearance and could easily have set up a couple of goals with some characteristic trickery and pacy running on the left. Did more in 10 minutes than he managed throughout the match against Liverpool.

Pedro: 5
Didn’t see a great deal of the ball after coming on with Hazard and made little impression.
