Chelsea to reveal ground expansion plans

Chelsea could create a new tier below street level under plans to increase the capacity of Stamford Bridge to 60,000.

It is one of the ideas which will be put out to consultation and explained in more detail at an exhibition in a fortnight’s time.

Club owner Roman Abramovich is keen to boost the current capacity of 41,798 to generate more revenue.

Local residents and supporters are being invited to the exhibition which will be open at Stamford Bridge between 12pm and 8pm from 30 June to 2 July.

A club statement added: “[The plans] will include an explanation of the rationale for expansion, driven by spectator demand for more seats and the need to increase stadium revenue to remain competitive with our major rivals, this revenue being especially important under Financial Fair Play rules.

“Local stakeholders, neighbours, season ticket holders and club members will be invited to comment on the potential expansion.”
