Chelsea returned to winning ways courtesy of second-half goals from Willian and Diego Costa.

Willian opened the scoring just after the hour mark with a curling shot after good work by Costa.

And Costa scored with a similar strike seven minutes later following Nemanja Matic’s powerful run.

The result is a welcome boost for Chelsea following recent defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal.

Still without injured captain John Terry, boss Antonio Conte reacted to the back-to-back losses by making significant changes in an attempt to shore up his leaky defence.

Out went Branislav Ivanovic as Conte switched to a back three of Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta.

The changes paid off, although Hull were well in the game before Willian broke the deadlock.

Chelsea’s class told in the end, however, and Victor Moses, who was also given a starting place, repaid Conte with an excellent performance at right wing-back.

And Conte’s side would have added a late third had substitute Pedro not missed a chance from close range.

Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Alonso, Cahill, David Luiz, Kante, Matic, Moses (Pedro 85), Willian (Chalobah 89), Hazard (Oscar 81), Costa
Subs not used: Begovic, Ivanovic, Fabregas, Batshuayi.
