Chelsea boss Mourinho backs Torres

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists Fernando Torres deserves credit for his contribution this season.

The Blues’ lack of a cutting edge up front has been well documented and Mourinho is expected to spend big on at least one striker this summer.

But he believes Torres, who has scored nine times during an injury-affected campaign, has shown his ability when fit.

Mourinho said: “Nando’s having a very acceptable season – he had two injuries in his best moments.

“The first was after he scored the winner against Man City and he was out for a month. After that he scored at Southampton and Hull and he had another injury, but in the middle of that he was doing well and scoring some important goals.”

Torres’ goal in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Galatasaray in the first leg of their last-16 tie was the Spaniard’s sixth goal in his last five Champions League starts.

However, he faded as the game wore on and looked tired before being replaced midway through the second half.

“He gave a lot but obviously the gas was finished and I had to change him,” Mourinho admitted.
