Chelsea agree fee with PSG for David Luiz

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Chelsea v Norwich City - Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are on the verge of re-signing David Luiz just two years after selling him to Paris St-Germain.

The two clubs have agreed a fee, understood to be considerably less than the £50m PSG paid for him in 2014, which was a world record sum for a defender.

Luiz is in London discussing personal terms and is set to undergo a medical, with just hours remaining in the transfer window.

The Blues have been searching for a centre-back but were unable to agree a deal with Napoli for Kalidou Koulibaly, while AC Milan have similarly refused to part with Alessio Romagnoli.

That has paved the way for the surprising return to Stamford Bridge of Luiz, who made 81 Premier League appearances for the club during a three-and-a-half-year spell.

Earlier on transfer deadline day, Chelsea signed left-back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina on a five-year deal.

A former Real Madrid academy graduate, who made one first-team appearance for the Spanish giants, Alonso moved to Bolton in the summer of 2010, and made 46 appearances for them over three seasons.

He was a team-mate of Gary Cahill for 18 months before the England international’s move to Chelsea.

He joined Fiorentina in 2013 but returned to the Premier League shortly afterwards when signed on loan by Sunderland, playing in the League Cup final against Manchester City and being part of the Black Cats team that won at Stamford Bridge, ending Jose Mourinho’s 77-game undefeated home league run.

Alonso returned to Fiorentina and last season established himself as a regular as they finished fifth in Serie A.
