Chelsea Ladies knocked out of Champions League

Aluko has been a star performer in the title run-in

Chelsea Ladies crashed out of the Women’s Champions League after losing 2-0 to Wolfsburg, 4-1 on aggregate.

Having lost the home leg last week, the Blues were always up against it and failed to heed an early warning sign when Alexandra Popp headed wide.

The hosts scored on 12 minutes with a spectacular strike from Vanessa Bernauer, who picked up a Chelsea clearance and fired in a dipping shot from 30 yards.

Babett Peter also fired wide as the Blues struggled to make an impact before half-time.

Much like in the first leg, though, Chelsea were a lot better after the break and had a penalty shout turned down when Ji So-yun went down in the box.

Eni Aluko (pictured) then hit the bar with a shot from outside the box, while Fran Kirby spooned over from six yards after latching on to Gemma Davison’s delivery.

But Wolfsburg struck again midway through the second half as Caroline Graham Hansen’s shot came back of the post and Popp’s follow up was deflected in via Claire Rafferty.
