Ollie Watkins made one goal and scored the other as Brentford moved to within five points of the play-off places with a battling win.

The Bees took the lead when Burton defender Kyle McFadzean could only divert a teasing Watkins cross into his net after the break.

And the striker made it 2-0 with a low shot after cutting inside from the left.

Watkins’ strike was the first shot on target in a game of few chances and very little goalmouth excitement.

The Brewers, who remain second from bottom in the Championship after their 13th home defeat of the season, rarely looked like getting back into the match after Watkins forced the opener following a deep cross by Romaine Sawyers.

Victory was as good as certain when Watkins netted after a purposeful run ten minutes from time.

Substitute Sergi Canos then tested Stephen Bywater with a rasping strike and Watkins nearly grabbed his second goal in injury-time with an 18-yard shot, but was also denied by Bywater.
