Warburton defiant after play-off setback

Brentford manager Mark Warburton insisted his side can win at Middlesbrough in the second leg of their Championship play-off clash and reach Wembley.

On-loan Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta scored an injury-time goal at Griffin Park to give Boro a 2-1 lead to take back to Teesside.

But Warburton believes his team are capable of prevailing in next week’s return leg.

“Our job is simple now. We have to go there and win and we have enough players with enough ability to do that,” he said.

“There’s frustration among the players but no negativity. It’s only a one-goal advantage. We have been capable of going to tough venues and taking the points all season. We’ll look forward it.

“They have a choice to make. What do they do in front of their own crowd? Do they shut up shop? We are 2-1 down at half-time, that’s all there is to it.”

Andre Gray’s 53rd-minute equaliser seemed to have earned a draw for the Bees, who had a number of chances to score a second goal before Amorebieta struck.

Warburton added: “We were frustrated with the first half. We were laborious moving the ball and they were very well organised.

“The second half was much better with a better tempo. We created chances and there’s nothing to say we won’t do that again at their place next week.”
