Smith explains why Brentford did not sign a striker

Dean Smith insists he is happy with Brentford’s transfer business and none of the strikers on the market took his fancy.

The Bees are set to lose top scorer Scott Hogan in a £12m deal to Aston Villa and will not be bringing in a replacement centre-forward.

Lasse Vibe scored twice as the Bees beat Villa 3-0 and Smith believes he has goals in his team with new signings Sergi Canos and Florian Josefzoon.

“Value is the important thing and nobody came to the fore that was of value to us,” the Brentford boss said.

“I’ve got Lasse Vibe, Philippe Hoffman as well. We just bought Sergi Canos, who played his last half-an-hour in a Brentford shirt as a centre-forward.

“Flo can play up front as well. We have got a lot of players who can play there, and I feel we have brought in goals.

“January, for me, has no value in the window. People are paying crazy money. We might get a lot of money in for Scott but you can’t go and replace a player for the money he’s gone for at a club like this.

“We are not an Aston Villa or a Sheffield Wednesday. We have to be more astute in the market. I’m really pleased that we tied up Sergi and really pleased that we go Flo. For me, they will strengthen the squad for the future.

“They wanted to prove something tonight and I thought we played brilliantly all over the pitch. I’m really pleased.”
