Play-off chasing Bees suffer defeat

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Brentford 0

Brentford’s promotion hopes were dealt a major blow as a defeat at Hillsborough left them three points outside the play-off places.

Kieran Lee netted a 75th-minute winner for Sheffield Wednesday, firing home after Caolan Lavery did well on the flank and Segiu Bus teed Lee up to score from eight yards out.

Alan Judge missed a glorious chance to equalise when he blazed over after finding himself with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Judge had earlier hit the bar – again after being through on goal – two minutes before half-time.

Andre Gray had a couple of attempts on goal in the first half, but Wednesday threatened at the other end and visiting keeper David Button produced saves to deny Lewis McGugan and Lee.

Brentford stepped up a gear after the interval, with Jake Bidwell sending a shot wide after being found by Judge.

And Gray missed a great chance, shooting wide after being set up by Toumani Diagouraga, before Lee broke the deadlock.

Brentford are next in action on Saturday when they are at home to Bolton.

They then visit Reading before a final-day match at home to strugglers Wigan.

Brentford: Button; Odubajo, Dean, Tarkowski, Bidwell (Smith 81), Diagouraga (McCormack 81), Douglas; Jota, Judge, Dallas (Toral 65); Gray
Subs not used: Bonham, Craig, O’Connell, Udumaga.
