Bees frustrated by Oldham stalemate

Brentford were left frustrated by a goalless draw at Boundary Park but results elsewhere saw them increase their lead over the chasing pack.

Both goalkeepers made good saves to preserve their clean sheet, with the Bees’ David Button saving David Worrall’s deflected effort as Oldham had the best of the first half.

Opposite number Paul Rachubka denied Clayton Donaldson and produced a fine save late in the game from Brentford substitute Stuart Dallas.

The Bees have fallen six points behind Wolves in the chase for the title, but are now four ahead of Leyton Orient in third after the O’s were beaten by Bradford.

Brentford were far from their sparkling best, with Oldham presenting a threat throughout.

The hosts created several chances in an open first half and Button reacted well to tip away Worrall’s deflected shot, while Danny Philliskirk headed over from close range.

Brentford had a couple of sights of goal late in the first period. Will Grigg had a shot blocked before Donaldson produced a fine save from Rachubka.

Oldham began the second half on the front foot, with James Wilson’s header kept out by Button and James Dayton should have done better than shoot tamely at Button having been put through on goal.

Both sides had half-chances to snatch it late on.

After Rachubka had saved from Dallas, the Bees midfielder was presented with another opportunity by Philliskirk’s header but sliced over.

Oldham’s James Wesolowski then moved in on goal but failed to connect with his shot and Button made a save as Brentford had to settle for a draw.
