Gray scores but Bees lose in friendly

Andre Gray scored Brentford’s goal as they ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 loss at Norwich.

Gray, a transfer target for Hull, equalised with a thumping strike after Wes Hoolahan had opened the scoring for the Canaries, whose lead was restored in the second half by Cameron Jerome.

Hoolahan put Norwich ahead on 17 minutes by lobbing David Button after being set up by Jonny Howson’s pass.

But Gray levelled just over a minute later when he pounced on a defensive mix-up and emphatically fired home from just inside the penalty area.

Button produced two fine saves to ensure his team went in at half-time on level terms.

The Bees keeper did well to deny Howson and even better to stop Bradley Johnson’s long-range shot.

Button produced another fine stop in the second half, this time to tip away Russell Martin’s header.

But he was unable to keep out Jerome’s driven shot after the striker had collected Andre Wisdom’s through-ball.

At the other end, Norwich keeper John Ruddy produced a late double save to deny Akaki Gogia and Marcos Tebar.

Brentford:  Button, Yennaris (McCormack 45), Bidwell, Kerschbaumer (Tebar 71), Barbet (Tarkowski 45), Dean (O’Connell 81), Vibe (Jota 45), Diagouraga, Gray (Hofmann 71), Judge, Gogia.
