Hogan strikes as Brentford win in Germany

Hogan has scored three goals in two substitute appearances

Scott Hogan continued from where he left off last season as he netted the only goal in Brentford’s 1-0 friendly win over German second-tier side VfL Bochum on Wednesday.

The Bees striker, who scored seven times in as many games at the end of the last campaign, struck late in the first half from Maxime Colin’s low cross.

Goalkeeper Dan Bentley was the only one of Brentford’s three summer signings to start and he made an excellent early save from former Fulham midfielder Thomas Eisfeld.

Bentley also denied Peniel Mlapa before Hogan applied the finishing touch at the other end to put the visitors ahead.

Bochum had an immediate response ruled out for offside, while Konstantin Kerschbaumer blocked Anthony Losilla’s effort on the line.

Brentford introduced recent addition John Egan at the break, while Romaine Sawyers came on for the final 25 minutes.

The Bees went close again when Nico Yennaris fired just wide while Bentley was called upon to deny Nils Quaschner.
