Brentford have completed a move for Walsall midfielder Romaine Sawyers and are also closing in on the signings of Gillingham defender John Egan and Southend goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

Sawyers, 24, has agreed a four-year contract with the Bees, having been an ever-present in the Walsall side that reached the League One play-off semi-finals last season.

After scoring six goals from midfield, he was voted the second best player in the division last season by his fellow professionals, behind Gillingham’s Bradley Dack.

It is the second time that Brentford boss Dean Smith has signed Sawyers, having brought him to Walsall from West Bromwich Albion in 2013.

Sawyers is the Bees’ first new arrival of the summer but Egan and Bentley are also having medicals.

Defender Egan, 23, was named in the League One team of the year last season after an impressive campaign with Gillingham.

Goalkeeper Bentley, 22, helped Southend to promotion in 2015 and was subsequently the subject of three approaches from QPR last summer.

However, one player set to leave Brentford is captain Jake Bidwell, who has completed a medical ahead of a £1.3m move to QPR.
