Double injury blow as Brentford lose at Wolves

Lewis Macleod, Brentford.

Wolves 3 Brentford 1

Josh McEachran and Lewis Macleod were both taken off injured as Brentford were beaten by two Joao Teixeira goals at Molineux.

Wolves went in front shortly after half time when, with McEachran on the ground, they countered and Douglas Costa played Teixeira in to finish.

On 58 minutes, on-loan Benfica man Teixeira doubled the lead with a free-kick which eluded everyone and nestled in the far corner.

Shortly after Macleod had limped off, Sullay Kaikai scored the first goal of his loan spell from Crystal Palace with a firm shot into the roof of the net.

But as the Bees pressed for an equaliser, they were caught out in injury time by a fast break and Ivan Cavaleiro made the points safe.

Both goalkeepers produced one key save, with Scott Hogan’s early effort pushed behind by Wolves’ Carl Ikeme and the Bees’ Daniel Bentley denying David Edwards’ shot from distance.

But most of the action came after half-time, with Brentford feeling aggrieved that they were left defending with 10 men as Wolves broke, Teixeira slipping the ball beneath Bentley.

McEachran had to be stretchered off, which unsettled Brentford a bit, and they needed some last-ditch defending to keep Wolves at bay.

But for all their efforts in open play, it was a set-piece which undid them as Teixeira’s ball in somehow found its way in beyond the dive of Bentley.

Macleod limping off further compounded the Bees’ problems but they were back in when Nico Yennaris, on for McEachran, lofted a ball in for Kaikai who fired in from an angle.

Lasse Vibe nodded wide while John Egan had a header saved and in their eagerness to hunt the equaliser, Brentford were left exposed to a three-on-one counter, with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson setting up Cavaleiro.
