‘Class act’ Smith signs for Brentford

Brentford manager Mark Warburton believes Tommy Smith will be a quality addition to his squad.

The former QPR and Cardiff forward, 34, has signed a one-year deal at Griffin Park following a successful trial.

Smith, who had two spells at Watford and has also played for Sunderland and Derby, joined QPR from Portsmouth in August 2010 and had an eventful two-year stay at Loftus Road.

He scored in the 2-0 victory at Watford which clinched promotion in 2011 and his goal at Everton gave Rangers their first win back in the top flight after a 15-year absence.

Warburton told West London Sport: “He’s a class act on and off the field and will bring great experience and maturity to the squad.

“Tommy will be a quality addition. I’ve been really impressed with him and, like Alan Judge, he can play in a variety of forward positions and gives us that flexibility we need.”

But Warburton is still keen to bring in another forward.

“Tommy plays in those number eight, 10 or 11 positions so we are still looking for someone to fill that specific striker role,” he said.

“We may bring in one or two more but, at the moment, I’m very happy with the squad.

“Frank and his team have done fantastic in terms of recruitment and we have some real strength in depth.”
