Brentford draw after Tarkowski blunder

Brentford 2 Bolton 2

A James Tarkowski error proved costly for Brentford as their promotion bid suffered another setback.

First-half goals from Alex Pritchard and Jonathan Douglas had put the Bees on course for a first victory in four matches, which would have moved them to within a point of sixth place.

But a poor back-pass from Tarkowski allowed Mark Davies to rob David Button and score into an empty net.

Brentford hit the post through Andre Gray in the first half and finished the game strongly, but they remain three points short of the top six with two games remaining.

Pritchard returned from injury as boss Mark Warburton’s only change and he opened the scoring on 35 minutes.

A swift breakaway saw Gray, Alan Judge and Pritchard outnumber Bolton’s defenders and an unmarked Pritchard swept the ball past Wanderers keeper Adam Bodgan.

The visitors equalised four minutes later, having already seen Liam Feeney’s effort cleared off the line, when Adam Le Fondre was put through by Emile Heskey and slotted into the far corner.

But the lead was restored when Douglas headed beyond Bogdan via the post just moments after Gray’s effort had hit the woodwork.

Brentford had chances to kill the game off but shots from Jota and substitute Stuart Dallas were disappointing, and then Tarkowski’s 71st-minute mistake gifted Bolton a second goal.

The centre-back, under minimal pressure, over-hit a short pass that Button had to work hard to control, and Davies was able to rob the keeper and tap home.

Brentford (4-2-3-1): Button; Odubajo, Dean, Tarkowski, Bidwell; Douglas, Diagouraga; Jota, Judge (Toral 79), Pritchard (Dallas 61); Gray (Smith 79).
Subs not used: Bonham, Craig, McCormack, Udumaga.
