Brentford beaten on Gray’s Luton return

Andre Gray’s return to Luton Town ended in defeat as Brentford were beaten 2-1 at Kenilworth Road in their latest friendly.

The Bees striker played the last quarter of the game against his old club, from where he signed last June, but was unable to prevent the League Two side winning.

Luton went in front against the run of play in the 40th minute when Luke Wilkinson headed home from a corner.

Earlier, the Bees had the ball in the net through summer signing Philipp Hofmann but he was ruled offside and Hatters keeper Elliot Justham saved from Ryan Williams’ free-kick and Stuart Dallas’ shot.

But just four minutes after falling behind, Marinus Dijkhuizen’s side were level. Andy Gogia, who had impressed in Saturday’s win over Stoke, produced a cross from the left that Hofmann converted.

A quieter second half livened up when Justham denied both Gogia and Hofmann and former Hatters hero Gray entered the fray.

The Luton keeper was again worked by Gogia, with Gray unable to react quick enough to the loose ball.

And the hosts grabbed the winner 12 minutes from time with a precise finish from Calvin Zola, who beat Bees substitute keeper Mark Smith.
