Brentford battle to a draw at Wigan

Wigan 0 Brentford 0

Brentford shared the points with former boss Uwe Rosler as their first meeting since the German moved to Wigan ended in a goalless draw.

Both sides wasted a number of inviting chances to claim maximum points at the DW Stadium, with Andre Gray clipping the Bees’ best effort onto the roof of the net in the first half and Wigan’s James McClean off target late on with a header.

The Bees laid siege on the home side’s goal early on as both Moses Odubajo and Jota tested keeper Scott Carson.

Odubajo had an effort from outside the area tipped around the post, while Jota failed to lift the ball over the onrushing Carson from a tight angle.

Alan Judge then threaded a ball through to Odubajo in the box, but the winger was flagged offside as he thrust his leg out to direct the ball against the post.

Brentford keeper David Button ensured the scores remained level at the break denying Shaun Maloney after Oriol Riera slipped the ball to the Latics captain on the edge of the box.

At the other end, Gray raced onto a long Jonathan Douglas ball to lob the best chance of the half on to the roof of the net, with Carson racing off his line to force the striker to try the chipped finish.

Wigan went close to snatching the lead before the break as Bees defender Jake Bidwell stabbed the ball narrowly wide of his own goal as Callum McManaman tried to find Riera.

While Wigan caused Brentford’s defence trouble immediately after the interval, they did not seriously threaten.

The Bees caused little concern at the other end, as Alex Pritchard thundered a shot straight at Carson and Douglas fired into the side netting after Judge dropped the ball into the midfielder’s path with a delicate volley.

Wigan finished strongly with McClean unable to direct a powerful header on target with three minutes remaining.
