Bees swoop for Rangers star MacLeod

Brentford have confirmed the signing of highly-rated Rangers midfielder Lewis MacLeod.

The 20-year-old, who earned his first Scotland call-up for the matches against Republic of Ireland and England last month, has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal at Griffin Park.

The fee is believed to be in the region of £1m.

MacLeod has eight goals to his name in 21 appearances for Rangers in all competitions this season. He netted the winners against Scottish Premiership sides Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St. Johnstone in the League Cup, and has also starred for Scotland’s Under-21s.

He first broke into the Rangers side as an 18-year-old and in total has played 76 games for the Glasgow club, scoring 16 times.

MacLeod’s recent form led him to be linked to a clutch of English clubs, including Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa and Burnley.

But Brentford have stolen a march on the Premier League sides by snapping up MacLeod, who will join up with the squad after the FA Cup third round tie with Brighton on Saturday.

Bees boss Mark Warburton said: “I am delighted to have secured such a young talent as Lewis. He has had an outstanding season with Rangers.

“He is a player who can play in all midfield positions, has two excellent feet and an eye for goal.

“He will be an excellent addition to the playing squad and I am sure he will play a key role in the second half of the season.”
