Bees end wonderful season with a win

Brentford 2 Stevenage 0

Stuart Dallas and Alan Judge scored and Kevin O’Connor made his 500th appearance for Brentford as they ended an historic season with a victory.

Club stalwart O’Connor was brought on as a 25th-minute substitute to a hero’s reception at Griffin Park, where a crowd of more than 11,000 turned out to celebrate the club’s promotion.

Having clinched a place in the Championship with three games to spare, the Bees were keen to finish the campaign in style.

Dallas broke the deadlock on 76 minutes, netting from eight yards out after the ball had been pulled back to him by substitute Nico Yennaris.

And Judge added to the carnival atmosphere by firing into the bottom corner in the final minute.

In a game of few clear-cut chances, former QPR goalkeeper Chris Day produced a fine save to deny Clayton Donaldson when he tipped the striker’s close-range shot on to the post early in the second half.

But Day was well beaten by Dallas’ emphatic finish and then a thunderous strike from the Northern Irishman that smashed against the bar, before the classy Judge grabbed his seventh goal since arriving on loan from Blackburn.

Relegated Stevenage barely troubled David Button, although the Brentford keeper did well to push away Michael Doughty’s deflected shot.

The win means Brentford, who will face west London neighbours Fulham and possibly QPR in the second tier next term, finish their campaign with 94 points.
