Aston Villa boss rues ‘shocking’ defending but insists goals will come

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert said he was confident his team would soon end their goal drought after the 2-0 defeat at QPR.

Villa have now lost five matches in a row and played nearly nine hours of football without scoring a goal.

But Lambert believes striker Christian Benteke, back in action after an Achilles injury, will eventually give them a cutting edge.

The Scot was more concerned about his side’s defending at Loftus Road, where they had plenty possession but were beaten by two goals from Charlie Austin.

Lambert said: “I know we’re going to be okay in that [goalscoring] department once Benteke is up to speed. We’ve also got guys like Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann who have got goals in them.

“It was only Benteke’s second game in six months or so and it’s a long time to be out. He might need six or seven games to get up to speed.

“My concern was that when you have that much of the ball you have to score but you’ve also got to defend.

“The two goals we lost were shocking, especially as we were on top. We had most of the possession but defended poorly for the two goals.”
